I've gone through about 10 red claw crabs that have scuttled out of various tanks in the past 2 years. I've completely given up trying to keep those things; unless your tank is completely sealed with duct tape, it seems they will inevitably manage to crawl out somehow, leaving you with the aggravating task of finding them dried up somewhere in the house.
Ghost shrimp also have an irritating tendency to jump out of a tank, though nowadays my fish generally manage to gulp the majority of them down before they have a chance at doing that.

I keep a crawdad in my 150 along with an ornate bichir, dradong puffer, 2 dats and a flowerhorn. The tank is 24" deep. So far so good. He lives in a cave under a stump. He reaches out to get his food and then scuries back to safety. Originaly he was food now hes a pet. :)

awesome, did he eat his victims or just kill them for the heck of it? how big were his biggest victims in comparison to himself?

well the
oscars were 3"
jd were 2-3"
the pike was ........................................
8.5" ate them all
i bought him his own 10G when he tried to eat my rtc and tsn
I've had around 5 crayfish and 4 of them have craweled out and died. The one that's left just hides in a shell.

geez, I never realized crays were so likely to crawl out. The ones I kept always stayed put in their tanks. Its the damn CRABS that crawl out like nuts, in my experience.

I just caught some crayfish today, I just brought them home to observe them for a couple of days and probably release them again. I hope they dont get out, my cat will love that LOL
I stopped keeping crayfish because they either eat thier tankmates or go for a walkabout.I did keep several small freshwater crabs in a tank that was heavily planted anb brushed against the window curtain, at night they sometimes took a walk but as soon as you turned on the lights they would run over and jump back in. It was funny so I would leave a couple of bits of dry cat food on top of the tank for them. I never lost any.

LOL! that's funny. So far haven't had any of my crays crawl out yet. KNOCK ON WOOD. My crays are expensive and would suck if they dried out.

My crayfish get out of my wifes often. It really freaks out the cat. BTW, to solve the escape problems from troublesome inverts or fish, I use a wire reptile top with only spots cut for my filter and airlines. It's virtually Fort Knox. If your worried about evaporation, Silicone some plexiglass to parts of the top. I haven't found this to be a problem though.

My store just stoped selling crabs.. (we kept little things like fiddler crabs) beacause I"d walk in the front door in the morning, and mind you the tanks are all in the back of the store.... and crabs would be scuttling at my feet. Like 20 feet away from their tank!!! they'd crawl up the heater cord and sneek out.. very very sneeky. And I had a spiney eel flip his way about six feet from his tank before he dried up..

I just got a crayfish last week. He's got his own 30 gallon high. Still a baby, but already taken out all three goldfish I threw in to acclimate the tank. I cut some pexiglass to cover the openings. I really hope he doesn't crawl out. I would crap my pants if I woke up with him on my pillow.

I had a few common green crayfish vanish still have no idea where they went.....I have several Blue cobalts tried to breed them but the female killed the males. I had a pair in a 30 gal but again she ate the male as soon as he molted. I have the two female in my 350 gal indoor pond. Will do a water change tonight and I hope they are still there. my 20" male koi has his eye on them. ALso mine destroyed a number of plants and of course they just loved the $35,00 new plants and thats why they in the pond.

I have a twenty gallon that has a small fiddler crab and ghost shrimp. The tank is open all the time. I've never had any of them attempt to escape. The crab has never touched the guppies in there. He will climb over all the plants, but always stops at the top of the tank. Or at least so far.

So far I haven't lost any of the shrimp to the crab. He seems satisfied with the crab bites I feed him and wreaking general havoc with my live plants.

I made the mistake of putting my red clawed crab in my brand new tank, with a few openings in it. After about 3 hours of being in there he was missing, so i searched all over the room to find where he could possibly be.
It turns out he just likes to climb into the filter and sit there. I had to used a duct/masking tape combo to seal every possible hole out, so now he's free to go up there whenever he wants.
The other weird thing is that I didn't know crabs could "swim", because mine will just crawl up to the highest rock, and swim from one side of the tank to the other so he can crawl up the filter.
I caught it on video if anyone is interested...

crays in my 55 never live long enough to crawl out "crunch crunch"
i did find one a few days ago that had crawled into the filter and molted but after i cleaned it he got eaten to
i did have my pet cray crawl out and disapear i found him befing the trash can about 50 feet from the tank
all the crabs crawl out because they are not really fully aquatic
Never lost a crab, I always have some sort of basking ledge or driftwood sticking up in the center of their tank for them to sit on.
I had an amano shrimp get out, how I don't know because all my tanks are covered.
Anyways, it jumped over to a bookcase that butts up against the tank. DH was walking by with some coffe, set the cup down on the bookcase, then jumped about 6 feet backwards while screaming like my 8 year old daughter! :grinno:
"OMG!, OMG! What in the h**L is that THING! It's gross, it's got stuff waving at me! ICK ICK! That came out of your fish tank, it's wet! It's going to jump at me, it's going for my coffee!"
I was laughing my ass off becuse this 2 inch shrimp had a 6foot 4 man cowering in terror!
Oh, an apple snail crawled out of my DD 10 gallon tank. We found it by her bedroom door! Wonder where it was going?

Howdy,
I had a 10 gal with fiddler crabs and some shrimp. The shrimp didn't make it too long ... they vanished. No clue if it was the crabs or not. The clean-up I certainly owe to the crabs. Anyhow, the fiddlers never made it out. There would have been enough room for them, but I had a nice piece of driftwood reaching above the surface with the filter outlet splashing down like a waterfall, and they just loved that. Apparently, they didn't see the need to relocate.

One crawlout: my six inch long crayfish male, Skit, who decided on late night that his 20 gallons long tank just wasn't enough...somehow he hauled his fat carapace out of the tank via an airline tube, and I heard him scuttling behind the tank on my dresser. Was quite easy to catch with a net though!

I had a crawl out crab once. It was quite the experince
I was sitting at my desk reading a book or something, with my glasses off because I use them to see far, not for reading. All of a sudden I feel something crawl on my toe, I look down and all I see is this big brown blur. I almosr flipped, it scared the livign hell out of me. I thought it was soem giant ugly bug that was goign to crawl all over me and then go into my bed only to have me sleep downstairs for the next weeki living in fear that it would eat me if I slept in my bed. Well anyways, right about to crush the sucker, I kick it off my foot, put on my glasses, and theres my little crab, so I picked him up and put him back in the tank, ha.

I had a female crawdad that was about 6-7" crawl out of a 20 gal that was almost completly sealed, two red claw crabs crawl out of a 50 gal bowfront and become catfood, and i don't know how many ghost shrimp have simply disapear.
I had a violet Goby (the fish that started my addiction into the monster fish realm) slither out of the tank the day after I bought it for him. He made it all the way across the room before he turned into fish jerky.

One blue "lobster" crawl out - $10 lobster, about 5-6" long. In a 2.5 QT tank for less than 24 hours. Placed a 5lb bag of sugar on the plastic lid and feeding door since they had a reputation as escape artists. Wasn't worried about the 1/4" or so gap left between the filter and the lid adn tank top. My mistake.:WHOA:
He was there at 6:30 pm Fri night when I left the shop - came in Sat. at 9:00 am, went to check on him and he's gone.
That was over a month ago - haven't found him (or more likely his carcass) anywhere. It's a 2,500 sq foot shop and the back door leads to a small crick so I keep hoping he made a break for it....:shakehead
