If Your First Plywood Tank Fails, Make It Bigger and Try Again - 650 Gallon Build

Yes well I had a bad experience with the LR and this seemed like a fool proof way to do things so long as you get your window seal properly done. I just used the same silicone I used to put the glass in, ran a small bead under the edge of the pond liner around where the window sat just to hold...

If Your First Plywood Tank Fails, Make It Bigger and Try Again - 650 Gallon Build

Absolutely right, not to mention very expensive... So I got the outside all finished up, now just need a better camera to get some nice pictures, but here is what it looks like now (sorry about the glare).

    Plywood and pond liner tank

Hey there, I just finished doing a pond liner build after a failed liquid rubber tank. Had it filled for 2 days so far with no issues, draining it as we speak to add rock/sand and heater/filter setup and then will be putting in the stock within the week. Here's a link to my thread, I'll keep...

If Your First Plywood Tank Fails, Make It Bigger and Try Again - 650 Gallon Build

Well I had to read though my thread to figure out what was happening with my fish tank... been away from the project alot longer than expected. Anyways since my last photos I screwed in the remaining walls (1/2" plywood) and cut out the window opening from a sheet of 3/4" plywood. Glass was...

    Fastest Growing Preds

Oscars are fast, silver aro if the tanks big enough, Frontosa's are exreeemely slow growers, talking couple inches a year, my Jags grew very quicly, from about 1/2" to 6" in 8 months, but at 6" slowed down alot. My black ghost knife also grew quick, from 1.5" to 7" in 9 months.

If Your First Plywood Tank Fails, Make It Bigger and Try Again - 650 Gallon Build

So with a bigger tank comes more stock! Here's what I'm thinking, let me know what you think! Current stock for the tank are, 2 - Jaguar Cichlids 5 - Frontosa Cichlids 2 - Black Banded Leporinus 1 - Oscar 1 - Sailfin Pleco 1 - Black Ghost Knife 2 - Green Terrors 1 - Jack Dempsey With all...

If Your First Plywood Tank Fails, Make It Bigger and Try Again - 650 Gallon Build

Well good news, after trying just about everything to get the glass out, I went down to the glass shop I bought the viewing window from. Turned out they have a tool, like a modified reciprocating saw with a skinny flat, kind of beaver-tailed shape blade. Only took about 25 minutes to cut it...

If Your First Plywood Tank Fails, Make It Bigger and Try Again - 650 Gallon Build

Got the 400 all cut up and hauled out, worked on the glass for a bit and there is absolutely no way for me to get it off cutting it with a utility knife. Any tried methods for removing silicone? Going to go down to the store tomorrow and see if I can find some sort of silicone remover. If...

If Your First Plywood Tank Fails, Make It Bigger and Try Again - 650 Gallon Build

That would be easier, but I don't think the pond liner will stick real well, I think it'll have to be held in place with the window?

If Your First Plywood Tank Fails, Make It Bigger and Try Again - 650 Gallon Build

Thanks, but this one will be just as beautiful, but bigger! ;) Ya, that's what I figure, less things to go wrong using the pong liner. Yes, I have a plan, hard to explain, but I'll do the best I can. My glass is 78"x31", so I will cut my viewing window hole out of the plywood all about 1.5"...

If Your First Plywood Tank Fails, Make It Bigger and Try Again - 650 Gallon Build

As the title states, my first tank build did not end up holding up, here is the link to my old 400 gallon build. 400 Gallon Build So the interior dimensions of the new tank are 86"x48"x35" making it just under 650 gallons. Figure the key to success must be to make it bigger so tacked on...

First Tank Build - 400 Gallon

Yes I definitely agree with your math, it depends alot on construction. I believe that if your glass is framed with wood and center braced that you good get away going quite high with 1/2" glass, bowing to the point of breaking would be the only way I could see it failing. If your glass is in...

First Tank Build - 400 Gallon

As far as glass thickness goes, no one has any real numbers, I was told that 28" is max for 1/2" glass, but I've seen a 36" in person, you'd pretty much have to test it out.

First Tank Build - 400 Gallon

Sooooooooooooooooooooooo, something went wrong with the 400... Not sure if I didn't coat the tank with the LR evenly or what exactly the problem was there, but anyways I will explain the story. Had a few people over to see the tank a couple days ago, was all fine and dandy and I noticed...
