Alright here goes.

I was gonna wait until Monday to start building my tank I've been planning for a while now. But a few to many Mt. Dew's today gave me an itch to do something. So I started working on my stand.

It's going to be a plywood tank with a wood stand. Living on the 2nd floor of a woodworking shop does have it's advantages.

Outside dimensions will be 72" Long x 32" Wide x 30" High. So if I were to fill it to the brim I think it comes out to 299 gallons and change. So call it a nice even 300 for the fun of it.

This will probably end up with about a 25" high viewing window so I'm shopping for .5" glass next week. But lots to do until that point.

A good portion of the wood used for the stand will be "reclaimed" material that is left over from other projects and salvaged from construction jobs. I just happened to have about 1,000 board feet of 2 x 6 material outside the bay door so I got to work on a stand. It will be topped with a piece of 1" MDF fiber board I have laying around.

Here is what I have so far in the last hour or so.

Now add some 90* corners and braces in the center.

One of the frames isn't secured at the moment to leave me room to deck the lower piece with a sheet of 1/2" plywood to give it a sturdier base and somewhere to set things. Then the top frame will be attached and the MDF Top deck and 1/2" plywood sheeting will be attached to the front and sides leaving an open back for plumbing access.

This was all attached so far with liquid nails and 2 1/2" high grade deck screws, also left over from yet another job.

That concludes tonight's start. Hopefully progress can continue to move forward. All comments welcome.

Awesome!! I hope everything goes well. I am planning on making my own plywood tank some day. I hope you can explain what you do thoroughly (if you want) so that I can learn and others too of course!

What are you planning to coat the plywood? Whatever it is, it would be really great if you can document that step by step as well. lol. :)

Another question, you said you're living on the second floor. That's like 2,500lbs of water on the second floor, I hope the floor is strong enough!

Good luck!

As for being on the 2nd floor. I was kinda worried about that as well. So I located my tank next to a wall and directly above the support beam downstairs. The post is 10" round and 1.5" thick steel. I could put a tank on top of it and be quite ok.

Cool, a new plywood build to watch and follow. Good start so far......keep us updated with lots of photos, and good luck.

I hope my tank comes out half as nice as yours did. Amazing finish work on your tank and the little bass plaque was a nice touch.

Making a run to the hardware store here in a few minuets to get a drill bit and countersink combo to help speed me along. I had three at one point and now that I need one I can't find any. Interesting how that works out isn't it?

Ok a bit more progress today after a nice breakfast out with my girlfriend.

Added a plywood base to set stuff on and help box in the stand. Then with some assistance I cut the piece of 1" MDF board for the top deck. Yes 1". Way strong and way heavy. My dad keeps shaking his head at me. But at this point I have maybe 20 bucks into it and it will be strong as all get out.

Headed into Home de'pot in a few to get a sheet of 1/2" Birch plywood to face this thing with and some molding to make it pretty. Might even get a coat of paint on this thing today if I get crazy.

I'm subscribed. Keep the updates coming. Nice work.

Thanks. Should have more to report later today but need to make a trip into town.

Kinda sucks be 30 mins from anywhere. Except when you don't want to be heard/seen. lol

I would never sleep at night and be afraid to come home! Once I had a 55 gal on the second floor and the back popped out.

Thank God we were home. No more tanks on the second floor.
