I have a 55 gallon tank with a 6 inch flowerhorn in it. I have a penguin 350 and whisper 40. Looking to change up my filtration. Both hobs are old and loud. I've only ran hobs in the past but am open to anything. Anyone have some ideas?
I opened this thread because of the title. I was hoping your filters were 55 gallons as I'm currently building 4 of the blue plastic 55 gallon drums as filters. I guess MFK's is nothing like it used to be.
Good luck with your tank filter. I'd use an undergravel filter if you want to avoid mini cycle spikes and quiet reliability.
I use 3 Fluval 307 canister filters in my 60g. I have one 4" Flowerhorn. In each canister I fill the 3 trays with BioHome SuperBio Gravel, 6lbs in each canister... 18lbs total across the 3. I leave the sponges in the left tray for mechanical filtration. I place a thin layer poly fiber floss in the top at the intake/outtake. Because the canister filters are so full, the flow is reduced so I'm basically getting a turnover rate of the equivalent of 2 307's. I'm noticing my nitrate levels to be below/at 10ppm constant. They are so quiet, especially when inside the cabinet, that my wife constantly asks if they're running.
