Personally, I think you got the wrong filter for what you want to do.
Sure, you could fill it with felt or some other fine filtering media and have the problem of a high flow filter trying to move water through small sieve media.
In a canister all you end up with is flow reducing as the material clogs.
With a HOB you end up with bypass or with some models of HOB, water overflowing the filter chamber.
Don`t know if that could happen with an AC.
For the same, or possibly less money, you could have got a Magnum series filter.
Either the HOT or Magnum350.
Not the flow of the AC but the micron cartridge will get the gunk out without any other issues.
These filter down to the 10 micron range.
Anything that escapes these cartridges you would need a UV to get rid of.

Purigen would help. ;)
Seriously, I'm not a chemical media fan but I'm a bit ashamed about how clear that stuff makes my water.

I think the HOT MAG 250 is pretty hot. :D
Great little filter.

HOT MAG 250 with Purigen inside where the carbon is supposed to be.

I would have tried this combo, But the HOT MAG got damaged during shipping... FML!
