Before you start your water change net the Afro and place it in a bucket or something until you are done.Use something with a lid so the Afro will be in darkness and it should remain calm while it is in there.

My afro is incredibly jumpy when spooked or stressed. If the lights are off and i turn the light on and startle it, it jumps hard. I do water changes with the tank lights off and after they've been off for an hour or so, helps keep it calm. If you do a continuous drain and fill just add some safe every 10 minutes or so depending on flow rates.

I have chlorine too, not chloramine. I just throw some dechlor in when I am done. Chlorine isn't all that toxic and the fish don't have a reaction to it.

Do what everyone else is saying. Fill the tank as you are draining it. You use more water to do a large water change, however there is a huge reduction in the stress on the fish. I once was curious if my fish even know im doing a water change and fed my tank during it. They ate no problem.
