Rogue one is set right before #4 (A new hope). The crew must retrieve the plans for the death star... which are used in a new hope to destroy the death star. So all of the characters in a new hope are alive and well during rogue one.

There can be not reboots!!! Not with star wars, that and back to the future films. I'm sure at least they are safe. For now. I'll be in a seniors home some day cursing them for doing it though I'm sure. If I still have my memory that is.
