Picked up one of these, would like to still keep tank around 78 for my L014. Possible?

Mine were kept at 80. Very active almost hyperactive fish

May be I am dense but the title and the OP appear conflicted... unless you consider 78 F a higher temp? I don't.

Anyhoo, my grannies live in water that's 85F-89F and appear fine.

Oh, I see. I think everyone's just repeating what FishBase states, which has some limitations one of which is the data should be scientifically rigorous and not be based on beliefs etc. Often time they would take the fish's geographical region and use seasonal water temps to come up with a range.

Anyhow, e.g. the temp range is even narrower for the common Oxydoras niger 21.0-24.0°C or 69.8-75.2°F http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=37

I've brought up this q before but no clarity was reached at least for the niger http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=32393&hilit=niger

My nigers (from 4" to 36") and my 3 grannies (~6") appear fine at 85-89 F. This is the highest temp of the year. In ~6 months the temp will go down to low-mid 70ies.

I bumped the tank up to 79°. Seems to be doing well. I think it has been eating the seeds out of my plecos zuchini at night. He looks chubby but not bloated.

There was a study on the Amazon river temps and related or nearby rivers over a span of 3 weeks at various depths. (I can't vouch for all of the locations as this was a 1963 study and names may have changed. In addition, some of these are apparently estuaries, so may be "local" names.)

The following rivers and locations were found to have nearly identical water temperatures all day long at depths of surface, zero feet (surface), 10 feet and 50 feet of 82.5-86.0 F. In short the range is very small 24 hours per day at any depth of 50 feet or less within these locations.

Baia de Guajara
Rio Para
Estraito de Boiuca
Furo do Tajapuru
Furo do Ituquara
Amazon River (south channel)
Rio Tapajos
Rio Negro
Parana do Careiro
Rio Solimoes
Rio Madeira

The temperature of the rain forest does of course have a wide range of as much as 30 degrees F from day to night. And it's certainly plausible that shallow, slow moving areas might get cooler than 80F during the night. But it's hard to imagine where fish (at least from these areas) are finding cooler water.

For those that want to grab the .pdf, it's here.

Great find, Doc! I've quoted your info in the PCF thread I linked above. Let's see if anything precipitates.

My Pterodoras Granulosus was with a Megalodoras uranoscopus and when i changed the temp from 68 to 75 the Megalodoras uranoscopus got sick and eventually died. I quickly got the Pterodoras Granulosus back to 68 and has been doing great ever since.
When the Pterodoras Granulosus was placed into water with a pH of 7.0 he seemed to get cloudy blue eyes and when i raise the pH to about 8.1 his eyes got less cloudy. This is just my personal experience and could be just because mine may have raised in cold water with a very high pH before i got him.

I have both a Mega and the Granulosus in the same tank. 7.8 ph and 79° F currently. Both are eating great and seem real happy.
