Dont be too quick to ditch the aqua clear. it has never failed me in the past. ive had success with an AC110 in tanks up to 90 gallons. they are not coslty and the parts(impeller) have never cracked or broke down on me. i do however use different brands of filtration media other than what is provided by AC. I use fluval ceramic rings for the biomedia they last forever!! dont crumble nd stuff =]]

I would get two AquaClear 500s for the tank. A good canister, like the Eheim 2217, would be another option.
Exactly what I was thinking.

I used to use 2 AC500 on my 100 gallon tank, That was sort of the minimum filtration. Now I use an Xp3 W/ Eheim pro media and one AC500, all is good. The Eheim pro media works noticeably better than the Rena media too.

i don't know how many gph the filter can handle or how much stock, but the more gph you can have the better. You can also modify your HOB filter and put some bio-glass or some other biological filter media. I use a emporer bio wheel but i don't use the cartridges that are made for them, I use a pieace of mesh filter then some bi-glass and then the bio-wheel. Works like a charm.
