Sorta like if the tank isn't full sized it doesn't quite reach full length. I know fish do that but maybe not lizards
Fish don't do that, and monitor lizards certainly don't..

For one thing, fish tanks are meant for fish, not large lizards. Fish tanks are called monitor jerky machines by people in that part of the hobby... Humidity and heat escapes far too easily, which is not what you want.

Secondly, a healthy Argus Monitor will outgrow that tank VERY quickly. You would have a month, MAYBE two. An adult Argus Monitor needs an 8'x4'x4' or a 10'x5'x4' with at least two feet of dirt as an absolute minimum. I would tend to suggest 12'x6' to 20'x10' as a footprint for the cage, with three feet of dirt. They are a very large and active animal, and you cannot provide too big of a cage.
