There are ways of "not" getting a reliable gender ID, and ways of getting a very reliable one.
Other than the obvious, not posting a blurry shot, or a too small or obscured one.
Posting a shot of a fish in a position where sexual difference are not shown, will not get a reliable ID
The shot above is one of those non-ID determining shots, or the one below, is too young.
even though this male is young, he is showing an ID-able head profile, below a mature female note the difference.
With Parachromis and similar species the head profile, and spots on the jaw are important to emphasize.
Note the steep head profile, and spots on the lower jaw of the male above.
The more streamlined profile and lack of spots on the female below.
A species with similar traits below.
Male Nandopsis tetracanthus above (note head profile(, female below.
Also note the differences in colors in the dorsal and body.
For the Archocentrus/ Amatitlania /Cryptoheros types differences can be very dramatic.
Male sajica above, female below
l
Male myrnae above, female below
Geophagines also exhibit some of these traits
Male Gymnogeophagus quilero above, female below

Here are a couple more
Mesoheros festae
Above a couple females, note the dark color in the dorsal, but the lack of iridescent spots. Also the head profile.
Below a male, dramatically different head profile
And if you can't get the spots in the same shot, add another
Now a couple Vieja
Male above, note shape of forehead
Below female, less dramatic head shape,
Above Chiapaheros grammodes young male
Below female, note head shapes, and facial striations
If you have two of a species, sometime a shot together can really help
Together gender differences are often magnifies,
as in the N haitiensus pair below

What a good resource. Thanks for the reference. I will refer to this before I am compelled to spam another ID thread :)

Great resource!
How early do most of these physical traits show. I know it takes a few inches/months to tell with color, does body shape follow suit or can it be determined from younger fish?

Depends on the species.
Certain species show quite early, some may not be obvious until they are almost 2 years old.
Below a pic of Herichthys carpintus at only an inch or two, the males already stand out.
But some are notoriously difficult.
The two Maskaheros argentea are about 6", and the differences are fairly minimal.
