We have a leo that is sometimes pure black, and sometimes a bit paler. I chalk it up to feeding cycles, lighting, substrate, etc. He has been dark more consistently since we've gotten him, and he is now maybe 7"? Maybe a bit bigger, I haven't measured him in a while.

A pure leo under stable condition should be black or at least greyish black.
A darker environment will help too. Was told that in Japan/Taiwan, hobbists keep leo in total white environment to bring out the white spots. The disc will eventually darken once they are put back into darker environment.
I should say, in normal circumstances, leo should be "black" at 6" or so,
unless they are under great stress.
