I attempted to talk my neighbor out of getting an ID shark for her 40 gallon. She was convinced they only grew to the size of the tank. Unfortunately when I showed her a picture of a full grown ID shark and told her that the organs could become stunted she replied that at least she could have for awhile it until it died of organ failure and then she would just get another. 
Not sure if she ever got one, I kind of stopped talking to her after that.
