I use ceramic rings also and prefilter media but I'm going to replace that with cermaic rings when I have the money

I was using 1 basket of pre-filter and 2 baskets of biomax, but recently replaced the pre-filter with scrubbies.
I put in half pond matrix and half eheim substrat pro. They're supposed to be the best type of bio so I bought both of them. Oh I. Also put in seachem matrix carbon for chemical filtration. I only use the stock sponges on the side for mech.
It really depends on what you need the fx5 for. I use it mainly for bio filtration. I filled 2 sections with bio-max and the other with crushed coral.
I have a Fuge with my water running through a Sock before it ever meets my FX5 and I filled mine with Matrix in the top two baskets and Fluval Ceramic rings in the bottom one. Stock sponges on the sides.

interesting guys... i might try to dabble in some of your combonations. i myself have just used it as "normal" per instructions set up...
