I picked up this “rescue” betta the other day and didn’t ask what type it was. They said it was male but I thought males had the large fins and females the smaller fin’s except for the wild types. I don’t think this is a wild type though. I know how to care for bettas, but beyond that I know very little about them
So, anyone know what type this is?

I know it might look distressed in the pictures , but I promise it’s doing great

Above is a wild type Malaysian Betta species to compare, Betta edithae.
Below a pair spawning. They are mouthbrooders (not bubble nestors), and it is possible to keep more than 1 male in a tank

Below , another wild type Betta albimarginatta, found in streams in Borneo, and another mouth brooder.

There are many more wild type, unique Betta species out there.
I hope your finding this one at a LFS "isn't an indication" that the unique Beta species are going the way of cichlids, where somewhere down he line, and in the end thru hybridizing will lose legitimate species end altogether and up with 1 generic, and unrecognizable mutt.

I *think* it might be the saddest alien betta I've ever seen, hard to tell with those photos. Which is a hybrid of a wild type betta with a splendens. They've become more common in the last few years.

There are plenty of bettas where the males have short fins - the wild types, for one, but also certain morphs of the regular splendens - plakats.

Ya , I don’t know what happened to it to become a “rescue “. There’s an aquarium co-op store near me and they have a small section called rescue bettas. Something was definitely wrong with it at some point, but it’s active and already eating well
But thanks for the info!

I know this betta didn’t arrive at the LFS through a shipment, it was a rescue, I don’t know if that means dumpster diving at PetSmart or just from someone that didn’t care for it properly, but I’ll find out next time I’m there. He does resemble the guy in the middle spawning picture

So this guy is doing awesome and starting to make bubble nests, the tank is a 9x9x9 3g cube. Is that big enough to add a female? There’s a tangled mess ( intentionally) of plants, jungle Val and frogbit to hide in
