I have attempted to breed my bettas once. I would like advice. I am thinking about using an 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 x 7 1/2 Styrofoam container that is used to store new fish and get them acclimated. Is this too small or is it good? I put Indian almond leaves in my breeding container always.

I always try to reproduce there natural environments as best I can. Sometimes even down to water chemistry can be important. Sometimes no matter what you do those 2 fish may just no be interested in each other. You may need a harem of 1 male and bunch of females to just get 1 pr to hook up. Im not much into bettas myself so I would try to research as much as you can and hopefully someone here can give you more info.

Below are Betta edithae, a wild type, mouth brooding betta from Malaysia.

I kept a trio on a 20 gal tank, with leaf litter covering the substrate providing tannins, and using soft, rain water for daily partial water changes to induce spawning

Here is another wild type,Bette species, Betta albemarginatta.
More than one can be kept together if the tank is large enough, they are also mouthbrooders.
They are found in pristine streams in Borneo.

I personally wouldn't use something as small at your container. There are many methods for spawning these fish often depending on where you are from. I use 18"x10"x10", 24"x12"x12", 12"x12"x12" and 36"x12"x15" depending on the species. I currently breed, Splendens, Hendra, Albimarginata, Smaragdina, Brownorum, Imbellis, Mahachaiensis and Dennisyongi. You will need cover and space for the female to hide/retreat to assuming yours are Splendens.

Do any of you think I could try a 20 gallon with some tetras. After the spawning I could keep the male and bubble nest is a net breeder which I could use to introduce the female to the male.

No, they aren't big enough to allow the female to escape the males attention. The ones I use are these 26x15x15cm Fish Breeding Box Isolation Net, Fish Breeding Box Aquarium with 6 Suction Cups for Fish Tank,Incubator Box for Baby Fishes Shrimp to Isolation, Rearing, hatching and Protection of Seedlings : Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies to allow them to see each other without letting the male access the female. The fry are also tiny and able to pass through the mesh which would be another problem. For the time until the young are free swimming the male needs to diligently return them to the nest allowing the fry to take oxygen. Tetra are also very effective at snacking of small fry which the male betta being so much slower would have no chance of stopping. Is the lack of aquariums/containers the issue? This is the easy part to be honest raising and housing potentially hundreds of fry is the hard part. Separating the males early to prevent damage and allow them to develop adult form is vital if you intend on selling them. At a push even something such as a plastic storage container think the 30ltr+ ones fill it up say 5-6" deep, add a couple of floating structures ( bubble wrap, floating leaves, cut polystyrene cup etc), a heater and a few areas for the female to hide (clumps of moss, stem plant bunches, generic resin cave/ornament) would do as a breeding setup again it's having room for lots of segregated males down the line that is the challenge.
