Very much south..
Excess nutrients and light.

Do not know about plecos..

Try and measure your phosphates also.

Direct sunlight even for a short period of the day will also bloom brown algae...

^^^^^ Yes...My Fish Room gets direct sunlight. Water Params are good, so I just wipe it when I can't bear it anymore. Not too inconvenient , as I'm always in there doing something anyway. Takes a couple minutes.

Do a 50% water change and make sure you siphon out the gravel really really well. Then cover your aquarium with a blanket and leave it alone without the lights on for about 4-5 days. Just put the light on while feeding your FH. After 4 - 5 days you will notice that all the algae has died off. Now you need to remove the dead algae too because that will in-turn rot and turn into nitrates -> more algae. So you need to do another 50% water change and siphon out the gravel real good again! 100% effective way of getting rid of algae :).
