I bought the pothos at walmart for like $5, it was a tiny little plant that has grown pretty darn big eating up all the bad stuff in the water :) I don't clean the lava rock, I just let it all go. It is a reeflo dart gold I'm using for the return has worked remarkably well.

Thanks Scott. What kind of lighting keeps them growing well? Not sure what I can get under the stand. Thanks

It doesn't take much light for pothos. Some Indirect filtered sunlight. A single cfl bulb.. ambient light from the room even. These little plants are hard to kill.

Here's mine growing under 2x 10watt cfls in my sump. 6500k if I remember. It's doubled in size in the last couple months.

It can grow tall so I shielded the bulbs from any rogue leaves. Not sure if it would be a fire hazard or not.
