A lot of planted tanks use clay as a layer of sub so i cant see the harm.....a lot of others use clay pots as well for breeding or hiding places

Yep,clay pots have been something of a fixture in the hobby for many years....not sure if they have any effect on water chemistry.

I believe I read somewhere that they can lower the pH some, I used them in my tanks with no ill effects.

I've used them before with no problems.. discus breeders use clay cones all the time. I would just give it a good scrubbing before you add it to the tank to get the excess clay dust off of it

Yes, clay pots are fine and some plants substrate for sale actually base/content major of real clay dirt/mud.
