This is probably a noob question but does the intake tube have a mesh at the opening or is just the tube? Because if it were a very large tank with a very powerful suction, could that not possibly hurt a fish accidentally swimming against the tube?

2nd question: would a 70 hob filter, and a 20 hob filter add together to suffice a 90 gallon tank? Does it work like adding up ?

Usually the intake would come with Of strainer on the end of the intake tube

As for the filters, theoretically yes but generally you want to go more than what the box claims to do. If your set on HOB's i would use a few sponges in conjunction.

I have found filter ratings are way exaggerated. Real world would be to cut their ratings in half. I am an overfilter person. As an example according to Fluval a single FX6 is for up to 400 gallons. On my 300g one should be enough... nope, not even. I run three of them on the tank.
