I thought they would have to be laid flat for them to be strong enough, the blocks i'm finding all seem to be about 4" wide.. The way I have it laid out in my plan would take 36 blocks. What is the purpose of the sheets of plywood between each layer of blocks?

You don't need the sheets in between but it will add some stability and shelf space. But if your using a sump it may not fit. The blocks I would use are the 16"×8"×8".

I would have to leave some space underneath for the cannisters somehow, how thick should the ply be?

Just called a place and they sell 6" thick blocks so I'll probably just use those laid flat so I'll need 24 blocks, the 8x4 sheets of OSB wood are almost half the price of the plywood, would this work ok?

The tank is 7x2.5 and the wood is 8x4, going to waste alot of wood here! Would the stand be ok stacked 4 high without ply between each stack to allow space for a sump underneath?

You've used a bit more than I was planning on using lol, the ones I'm using are breeze blocks, not the ones with the holes in them. Does the plywood on top have to be a certain thickness or will any thickness do?

I have always used cinder block stands, it's cheaper than buying a stand.
With plywood in the bottom and on top.
