In my experience, my GT will go after anything that looks like it will fit in his mouth. But, that's just my experience. My GT left large snails alone, although your JD might not.

If you add snails again in the future, I would add large ones and also watch the tank for as long as possible after putting them in. If you see him nipping at the snail(s) or looking really interested in them then they still might get eaten.

unless they can't fit the snail in their mouth right?

I've had 3" Oscars tear very large Apple Snails into shreds (and eat it all).

Never trust a cichlid with snails.

Not even a Microgeophagus Ramirezi? LOL. Once a cichlid figures out a snails shell isnt tasty, generally it'll leave it alone. yet small snails that dont have an effective trap door or strong shell can be easily eaten.

Suprised the Mbuna don't eat them. My AC's destroy any and all snails.

Either my JD or my Salvini managed to kill and eat two moon snails, one about the circumference of a quarter and the other somewhat larger. Both of the fish were about 4" at the time.

My mbuna have learned to suck ram horns right out of their shells. I can see a good sized JD crushing them without much problem
