Tortoises like any turtle should have full exposure to UV light during the day and a basking spot that it can move to or from at will at least 8 hours a day.

I know in turtles, makes have a thicker longer tail.

How long do u often bask your torts?
There's no set time or rules to this because all tortoise species are different but my Sulcata basks about 5-6 hours a day.


I usually bask them for 1-2 hrs doing night time..... With UVB lights....
Because they're diurnal animals they should ALWAYS be provided with UVB lighting. Even better would be actual, unfiltered sunlight. If you are keeping any tortoise species, they should be allowed outdoors when the weather and temperature warms up for some natural sunlight.


One more question, how do u determine the sex of the torts? By judging from the underneath? Tail?
Shell shape, tail length, vent location are the main ways of sexing a tortoise. But many of these characteristics do not show up until they are older and of a certain size.
