I heard clown loaches grow painfully slow. So I think they will be ok for atleast 2 years maybe longer.

Don't qoute me on this I really have no personal experience with loaches.

Clown loaches should not be kept in groups numbering less than 5. Too highly social to be relegated to smaller shoals. Imo, a 55 is too small for clowns, so I agree with you on not getting them. I've got a large school in a 360 gallon, with my largest loach at about 10 inches. But you could definitely do a school of five zebra loaches. Just as much fun in a much smaller package!

Clown loaches should not die before reaching "full" size unless they are improperly cared for. Bear in mind, they are long lived fish. In a good home, they can live 30 or more years!

I know they are long lived but any documented case of someone keeping a clown for 30 years?
