Chances are that it is a juvenile Anguilla marmorata and if so the giant mottled eel could grow up to 2 meters in length and live for up to 40 years! Good luck…… keep us updated!

If it's a male it'll stay "small", they top out somewhere between 2-3 feet. Still long lived though, potentially well over 20 years.

Possibly a short-finned eel (Anguilla australis),

Be sure to give growth updates! Eels are a lot of un, as it matures it will become more apparent.

It doesn't look quite like Anguilla australis to me because of the speckles. Maybe you're talking about Anguilla reinhardtii the australian short finned eel ?
