I just recently setup a nano and I have a freshwater master kit. I will eventually buy the reef kit but I wanted to know if there were any tests that were backwards compatible? is the nitrate or ammonia test the same?

yes but the color chart would be different. I can't rememberif its a shade lighter or darker. Spend the money on good test kits if your new to this. All you need at first is the basics you would need for f/w (ammonia, nitrite, ph) and a alk test. fast test or sea test isn't bad but I would buy salifert if you have the money there th most accurate.

The salt water master test kit, and the reef kit are the same. The reef kit just gives you a calcium test and I think a phosphate test, but does not include ammonia and nitrite tests. Salifert is considert the best consumer grade test available.

To my knowlage, the test kits will be the same stuff, just PH is a diffrent chemical from the freshwater.
