dude. Definetely go with a pickerel. They are awesome little guys, and its so awesome watching them take down feeders. They're incredible piscovores. Red fins grow to be about 12-14 inches, and really need a bunch of plants to hide in. The only problem you might have is that they'll probably only take live food. Almost impossible to ween them off of it.

You could try a gar look alike like the south american Spotted pike characin (Boullengerella maculata), fair are fairly easy to find and get 13-16" long, they like high 78-86 degree F. temps. 6-7 ph, and are tolerant of a wide range of hardness, they like being in groups and are not agressive with fish to big to eat. And they look cool. You could also try cachorros.
The pic is of the Boullengerellas
this fish are not a bad choice, but i'm wary of them being fin nippers...

for true gars, they tend to slow down in growth at a certain size. But still needs at least a 30" tank width, preferably a 36" one.

We have several gars in our tanks. First, gars need to be paired up, do not just buy one, as it WILL be unhappy. Floating plants are good- they like to hide under/around them. Moving gars from tank to tank can be very stressful on them, so keep that in mind if you will be changing tanks at any point. Our gars are in a 190 gallon tank with one arrowana, two parrots, and one pleco. All get along well.

Are you sure about the keeping gars in groups of more than one? I have never heard this before or heard them to be social with each other.
