I have a 20g that is over filtrered and right now I just have 12 small tiger barbs in there to keep the cycle and just a nice little colorful display.

I have heard of people using Tiger Barbs as dithers for african Cichlids before so Would it be possible to grow out young Mbuna with them?

Thanks

For compatibility issues its fine but in my opinion you can find more suitable tank mates normally you should try to keep Africans with other Africans. If I were you I'd also upgrade that tank size that tank is too small for a mbuna even if it is over filtered. If you can upgrade the tank and select other mbunas to go along with the one you have and if you like you could add synodontis cats. Or in a tank that size maybe consider dwarf cichlids like a krib or even go into South American dwarves you could get keyholes
