I've got two of the Aqueon ProHeaters 250W connected to a Finnex heater controller, http://www.finnex.net/index.php/finnex-hc-810m-digital-controller.html , and the set up works great.

The heater controller regulates the temperature, I've got another independent digital thermometer on the opposite side of the tank and the heater control and thermometer always match up in saying what the temperature is.

My tank is 150 gallons and stays a steady 78 degrees.

This is what I do as well except I dont use a controller. Stays 80deg in a colder garage and takes all the abuse my*cichlids can dish out

I use a Hydor inline and a ranco thermostat and I think this is the most effective way to maintain stable tank temps.
