Hi.
This flowerhorn was recently aoldnto me as a female fader flowerhorn.
But I am not so sure that it is a female as the behavior of a female Texas cichlid I already had in my tank has changed and is giving it a lot of attention since I introduced the flowerhorn to the tank.

I need help to identify the sex and type of flowerhorn this one might be.

I have included some baby photos and a most recent video of the flowerhorn and Texas interacting.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Looks to me like a male gold base x red dragon mix. Only reason I say male is due to the kok on the head. The only sure fire way to check a FH for gender is to remove it from the tank, hold it upside down and look at the 2 holes by the anal fin. If the vent is bigger then the anus it's a female, if the vent is the same size or smaller then the anus it's a male. I'll include a pic to show what I mean.

thank you all for replying.
I removed a larger male flowerhorn I had in The Who was very aggressive towards this flowerhorn. After I removed him it looked certain that the flowerhorn was pairing with the Texas. The Texas was dancing and seducing the flowerhorn and preparing the nesting site. So I thought the Texas was male and the flowerhorn was female. They seemed to be bonding as they both chased other fish away. However the next day the they turned on eahother. And it was mainly the flowerhorn who turned on the Texas and tore his lips and now she had asserted dominance in the tank So is she a male then??

I guess I will have to check it’s underside.

The excess aggression may be coming from all the mbuna that ya have in with em. African cichlids, no matter how small, all seem to have a real mean streak to em and will even pick fights with fish far larger then themselves. Granted for a FH and Texas that shouldn't be too much of a problem. The only problem I would really see long term would be that African and American cichlid require different PH parameters. Africans like hard water while most American cichlids like soft water.

The chipokae don’t seem to bother the Texas nor the flowerhorn.
But you are right. They are menacing especially to other fish around their size.

I will attempt to vent the flowerhorn either today or tomorrow.

Will keep you all posted.
