In an uncycled tank with no access to BB, spikes are a symptom of accelerating the natural cycling process, and water changes are a solution to a process being accelerated unnaturally to toxic levels. Fishless cycling can be done easily with no water changes and no fish losses by being patient.
I'm not saying it should be done slowly, just saying that WC are a result of a choice: the need is determined by decisions to add more nitrogen into a tank than it can process. Adding less will eliminate the need for a water change.
