Hi all,
We inherited a large male Red Devil who is 11-12" long. He was living in a 38 gal tank (12" x 36" 24H"), which is clearly too small for him. We've had him a bit in his 38 gal tank now and love him!!!

We were looking at larger tanks to get for him, but I am limited by our available space and floor strength, I think. I barely have room for a 48" tank, really, but saw a Marineland 60 gallon for a nice price w/these dimensions: 12.75"L x 48.5"W x 25" H.

I also saw an Aqueon 65 gallon tank with dimensions 18.4"L x 36.4"W x 25"H. That would fit my space better.

Which size works better for the fish? A longer but narrower tank, or a wider but shorter tank?

Thanks!

That's tough. My recommendation, wait a week. On Black Friday (assuming you're in the U.S. Sorry if not) many tanks will go 1/2 off. You'll be able to pick up a 75 gallon tank with the stand, lights and cover for $250. Until you get super large tank weight (apart from stand strength) shouldn't be too much of an issue. If you can't do the 75, The 65 is probably the better bet because of the 1.5 feet front to back. Best of luck, welcome to the forums and post a pic of him when you get a chance!

With size constraints a 40b isn't a terrible option either 36" isn't ideal but the foot print is better than the 60. That being said, neither one is more than a temporary home. An amph that size deserves a minimum of 90 gallons solo... just my opinion
