Is my light fixture strong enough?

If you have a regular t5 fixture then it will only support low-light plants. If yours is high output (HO), then you can probably do some medium light plants as well. Make no mistake - you can totally fill that tank with plants that will do fine in that light. But if you want to have more options, better color (especially reds), and better growth in your plants I would upgrade. LED's are fine but keep in mind that if they are tailored for the green plants, redder plants may not do as well. Each LED emits a specific frequency of light, which is great for targeting certain peaks, but is lacking in the full-spectrum department. Pick a tried and true fixture if you go for LED's. It's like the reefkeepers always say: metal halide for growth (plant overkill though), t5's (or other fluorescents) for spectrum, and LED's for accent lighting.
