I have my 150g tank on a cinder block stand, one column on each side of the tank with a 5 ft gap between the columns. Because the tank, water, and substrate weigh a little under a ton each column is three cinder blocks erode from front to back with the long side of the blocks aligned with the long side of the tank. I also used 4x6's to cross the span.

Remove cinderblocks, insert 2x4s and plywood.
Honestly, cinderblock stands look vulgar. If your doing a fish room, sure, it will work, but it looks like crap, IMO. I'd just spend a little bit of money and make a nice stand or buy one off of craigslist. You can find them for less that what you would spend on cinderblocks.
