Sold to me at LFS as a vieja sypisilum (sp?) but I could not find pics of juveniles to confirm. It's about 1 inch long I guess. Attaching pic with and without flash.

I don't think it's one either. I went to another store later in the week and got this one. I should have bought the 2 he had but just took one.

Don't think it's a Syns, I've got two about the same size and I can't see any similarities despite the flash/no flash.

With the red stripe and the few spangles it's got it could be a tiny umbee

Here's a shot of some true young synspillum, the name is considered now invalid (species synspillum is combined melanurum due to DNA testing result findings). And the name melanurum takes precedence because it was scientifically described in the year1862, synspillum not until 1935.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I hope it's not an umbee!

SO would be happy if it is a midas. Google search for midas juvenile doesn't bring up match.

Guess it could be a hybrid. I'll post again after he grows a bit.

After some Google searching....I'm hoping my mystery fish is still in the vieja genus. Found another forum where someone had a little guy like mine sold as a black belt (malicalauda - I'm butchering the spelling)but there was also reference it might be Herichthys.
