Hey all,

Been a while since I’ve been on this forum. Happy to be back :)

A couple days ago, I purchased a group of 5 juvenile 3 inch discus from a local breeder. They were labeled as brilliant blue/turquoise discus. They are said to be around 4 months old and the breeder said he does 75 percent auto drip water changes daily.

These discus are acclimating nicely to my 30 gallon quarantine/grow out tank. Eating freeze dried bloodworms and granule discus pellets on the first day.

For those experienced discus keepers out there, I want some insight as this is my first time keeps discus:

1) how often/how much do you feed (at this current size)
2) how often do you change water and how much (currently planning on doing 15-20 percent water changes 1-2 times a week)
3) What temperature is best for growth and color (my tank is set at around 82-85 F)

Also, when doing research on discus, I found that looking at the shape and eye body ratio you can determine if they are stunted. Compared to adults, their eyes are def a bit bigger. Are these fish stunted/slightly stunted? I did purchase these from a really reputable breeder and I am not sure if the eye to body ratio at the moment can be attributed to the fact that they are still juveniles. I am hoping these discus can still reach close to potential and get 6-7 inches In diameter.

Please any discus owner out there let me know what you think and if you could answer some of my questions above, would be appreciated :)

They looked slightly stunted but okay. I would bump temp 85-86f, feed 3-5 day. Water changes helps them grow. I grew 1 inches to 4 inches within 6 weeks with 5-6 feedings a day (medium feeds various types of food) 30% water changes daily. Now I'm doing 30% every other day

They look fine. They seem in good general health. You will want to bump water changes majorly, and stay there. 15-20% once or twice a week is not going to cut it. Good luck!

They look fine. Like everyone said, you’ll have to bump your water changes to like 50% daily and your temp to 86. Also, a 30 gallon is too small if you want dinner plate sized discus
