I suppose, if you look from bottom up you do see the cross brace. I think it has to do with how low the overflow teeth are cut and the rate of drain vs return? I've not considered it much, but wouldn't want a gap.
I don't see an issue with the water level aside from seeing the brace. The water is only slightly past the bottom of the half inch thick brace. Any suggestions along with your comment?
