Because, the vast majority of the game is played with the feet. Whereas american football the feet on ball action plays a much smaller part. Not sure if anyone realises, but soccer, the word, originates in england. A slang abbreviation. What I don't know is why americans adopted it. Maybe because you had already used (inappropriately) football for your version of rugby. Whichever way you look at it 'football' makes more sense for a game where a ball is kicked around a pitch for 90 minutes. Heading/chesting the ball and the keeper handling the ball are a small part of the game.
