Thankfully there is only 3 petstores that sell fish and 2 of them are the mom and pop shops.They keep there tanks clean all the time aswell as when a fish is sick they treat the tank and refuse to sell them.The people who work at these store actualy keep fish and have for many years so they will always give you advise even when it not something you want to hear.The other petsore though is the exact opposite know absoluty nothing about any animals in general.I rufuse to go in there now.A few months back I went in and they had a big bull bristenose pleco(6in).So I asked if i could get that pleco and she had know idea what I was talking about.So I said "the big black one with the sucker mouth and the and the little bristles on his nose"So while I was waiting the 10min to catch the fish I went to go look around.Then I came back on she had a little panda cory in the bag.So I just laughed in her face and I ended up catching the fish myself.Then someone brought a senagal bichir in but the guy who brought it in didnt know what it was.So they had about 3 employees standing around trying to figure it out then I took one look and told them what it was but they refuse to listen to me. So after a bunch of arguing they decided that it was a tiretrack eel I called them all fools and havent been back since.

I refuse to buy any fish from one of the LPS (not typing the name, but it rhymes with 'wet fart').

I popped in there last week to have a look at the claw trimmers they had available (for my cats) as theirs was getting dull, so I wandered over to the fish area and spotted a clear plastic bag with MANY dead fish piled on top of each other out in the open on a little cart; disgusting.

Honestly I blame the fish owners and not the local fish store employees when I was learning I did my research I took my time and figured out everything I needed to know to get where I am today I had no one to teach me.. Trial and error...it doesn't happen over night if you are really dedicated and truly interested you will learn what you need to and educate yourself when I walk in a lfs I walk around I know just about every fish in there and all the info I need to know to decide what I'm buying..this is 2013 and with all the technology there is no excuse that you can't learn what you need to know in plain English there is no truer statement then this...If you want something done right do it yourself... The fact of the matter is There are just to many lazy people out there that don't care and buy some small tank, walk in a store and go oh that fish is cool ill buy him and the fact of the matter is It will never change as long as fish keeping is a hobby and to most people fish are just possession's to them and not looked at with any importances or as a pet like they should be..just my 2 cents

Im gonna go ahead and assume the fish in question in the story is a pleco simply because people who dont know seem to think and always ask for one as a staple for any aquarium with the mentality its a "cleaner" fish and will help keep the aquarium clean...little do they know u can make a snowman with pleco poop

Some people who work in chain pet stores really don't know their fish. In petsmart i overheard someone walking into the fish station complaining that their blood parrots weren't breeding. In a fish specialist store she would have been instantly told that blood parrots were sterile and cannot breed but what did this guy say... "Dont worry I have bred blood parrots before they normally take their time!" *facepalm* I wish i had said something but i was too shocked by this blatant lie to do anything. Whats the morale of the story - Dont trust what people say in stores that aren't specialist stores.

NOT SURPRISED AT ALL... I PICKED UP 8 JUVI PEACOCK BASS FROM A LOCAL PETSMART ABOUT A MONTH AGO. I WAS ASTONISHED THEY EVEN STOCKED THEM. BUT WHEN I ASKED FOR HELP I HAD TO TELL THE EMPLOYEE WHICH FISH WERE THE PEACOCK BASS. APPARENTLY CICHLID AND CICHLA IS THE SAME WORD IF YOU WORK AT PETSMART. HAHAHA

LOL.. WALMART HAS GOT TO BE THE BIGGEST FISH KILLER AROUND. THEY MIGHT AS WELL REPLACE THEIR FISH TANKS WITH A FREEZER FULL OF FISH STICKS.

I work in a pet shop but I dont just edge for sales. I prefer to take care of the customer... although I agree that some employees are ridiculous. .
