Hi guys just recently came across these 2 small polleni cichlid in a local aquarium shop..approx 3-5cm
just wondering if they are poor quality or if all fry look like this at this age... ?don't really see them locally sold so have no idea if they normally look like this and colour up as they grow..
Any other tips for care diet etc is appreciated.
Cheers

Many fish look quite different as they grow! Those should darken as they grow :)

I certainly hope they do darken up Hendre! Fingers crossed for a Male and female also...
I travelled 45min each way today to get 2 more from another aquarium shop that has them in stock.. to grow out.. left empty handed.. as they where very sunken belly, slim overall, very flushed and white stringy poo.
So mine look awesome in comparison.

As Joe said, when young they can be drab.
Here is/are some young Paratilapia Andapa I had.

They grew into this

They can be very hard on each other, so if you don't want to end up with only one, lots of space may be required.

Above are two duking it out in a 300 gallon pool.

WOW !! that is an awesome transformation!! Thanks for sharing duanes.
I have them in a 8ft x 2.5 with some mild SA cichlids at moment.. the SA cichlids will be moved on shortly and i plan on this pair having the run of the tank with a few dither fish...

I have found Paratilapia to be rather benign when housed with new world or other cichlids (as long as they are not black with similar iridescent markings (like JDs are for example)).
Sometimes housed with other non aggressive cichlids, it helps to keep interspecies aggression low.

above housed with C bocourti and another Madagascan, Paretroplus maculatus.

below a female small spot housed with Saratherodon linnellii, and a wary female M festae.
