Ive got a 40 gallon sump, an Eheim Pro 3 and 2 Aquaclear 110s on my 220 and it works great. If you match your pump output to your overflow it will be quiet, my powerheads make more noise than my overflow. Also if you get or buy a properly designed sump with a chamber just for the pump you wont need to worry about overflow should your overflow get clogged, the pump will run dry before the tank overflows.

^^ I guess saying he starting eating it is a bit of a misnomer. He starting biting it and spitting out the pieces in the tank....not exactly the decor I was looking to add!

I have no complaints on my pair of FX5s. They are nice and quiet. Ehiem's do have a strong brand name and many loyal customers. I do not have any experience with them to compare to the FX5.
