Very unlikely you have barred midas, they are pretty rare ime.

I've had a few RD's. Usually start out orangish then turn a cream sickle like marble color. The largest I've owned at 10" just went total white. I do like the black barred RD. there's two for sale near me, I think they both are around the 8" mark.

Do these look like the red morph or the grey morph or can you not tell when they are young.

I have one right now that just hit 4 inches and it is just now showing signs of peeling. Like everyone is saying just stick with it and if they are going to peel, they will. The funny thing about my Rd is it was the largest one in the batch, most dominate, meanest, and the last to change. I did notice my RD fins turned very red just before this peel started about 3 days ago

A lot of pet shops/breeders are selling "Barred Midas" as R/D's most likely that's what you wound up with, If that's the case more props to you, Awesome cichlid, pretty rare & more valuable in my option!!!!
