How big is the tank? Don't forget about a powerhead for the tank.

If you go with the hang on back filters put media which is easy to clean. Something which is reusable is also helpful. You won't have to worry about running out. Ceramic rings in bags will work and easy to clean. In one of them I will use a product like chemi pure elite. This will act as both chemical and mechanical filtration.
225g and I want it to be fish only, not a reef. Yeah I already have somewhat compitent powerhead. competant enough until I want to get a new one anyway.

Can lava rock turn into live rock?

Yes, the term "live" just means it has bacteria growing on it. Any surface that is wet in the tank or filter becomes "live" with time.

(Cringe) Most Lava Rock that is sold for landscaping is actually 'clinkers' which is the slag/waste from steel production. For the obvious reasons, it shouldn't be used in saltwater systems.

For rock on a budget, check out garf.org for their aragocrete rock.
