i just use a long 3/4" clear plastic hose taped to an extendable broom handle and tie a mesh bag to the other end and start to siphon then throw the end with the bag into the sump so i dont loose any water and can just move the hose around to suck up the shells and i can take my time as the water is just cycling thru the sump

This is a great idea if you don't have sand :(
