I started keeping tropical fish a few years ago, when I lived in a coastal village. I'd had quite a lot of experience in the UK breeding certain reptiles, rodents and insects but not keeping tropical fish. One of my first learning experiences was with African clawed frogs - Xenopus laevis. For some reason I used to remove them from their tank so that I could clean the container. I always cupped them in my hands and transferred them to a bucket. Most times it was a fairly simple operation but occasionally one of them would simply slip out between my fingers and "swim" on the tiled floor. Believe it or not, they're quite fast just moving like that. Finally common sense took over and now I drain out the majority of water, clean the sponge filter and remove surface gunge from the insides of their aquarium with filter cotton wool. We live and learn!
