That is amazing. I would think it is a birth defect but there is nothing severely wrong that would hinder it in later life so they could survive and breed. People should probably control where these fish end up so they don't contaminate the blood lines..

It has to happen early in the development of the rays, When my Prego female died, I saw movement so I tried to do a c section, they were about 2 months into the pregnancy, the pups all died, they were all white, but they were about 2" and the disks were normal. My guess would be that something would have to happen in the first month.
