It's entirely possible to nearly eliminate waterchanges, just need an algae scrubber, problem with scrubbers is that in large sizes (as sole form of filtration) require alot of light imput, so those with expencive electricity (not me as its only 7cents KWH here) it can be costly, but a small scrubber with other filtration can and will prolong the need for changes if built and maintained properly.
