OP, just be aware that playground sand is very fine, will require a lotof rinsing to remove the ultrafine particluates, and a lot of people find it a pain in the *** due to the fine grain

Agreed. I wouldn't use it. I tried aquarium sand and that was a headache also..The pool filter sand is honestly way way better. I got a 50lb bag for 9.99. I read in the states you can get a 50lb bag for 5.99

Chain stores don't always sell the same stuff, they cater to the region. However, I doubt Lowes sell pool supplies during the cold months. There must be a pool supplies store somewhere near you, I'll bet they'll have it in stock.
