You can always buy playground sand (it's white color) from Home depot all year long and cost $4~$5 bucks for 50 Lb

OP, just be aware that playground sand is very fine, will require a lot of rinsing to remove the ultrafine particluates, and a lot of people find it a pain in the *** due to the fine grain

Agreed. I wouldn't use it. I tried aquarium sand and that was a headache also..The pool filter sand is honestly way way better. I got a 50lb bag for 9.99. I read in the states you can get a 50lb bag for 5.99

do you know if lowes sells pool filter sand all year round though?
Chain stores don't always sell the same stuff, they cater to the region. However, I doubt Lowes sell pool supplies during the cold months. There must be a pool supplies store somewhere near you, I'll bet they'll have it in stock.
