This is a friend's fish, not my own. He picked up six of them from an LFS, labeled as "red terrors". He's hoping they're festae, but I know there are a couple species that look almost identical as juveniles. I have no idea how to tell them apart though, so I'm enlisting help. What species is this guy?

Thanks for the help!

I agree with the others. This is a mean fish, I hope that it is in a large tank, or being kept by itself.

It won't matter...I imagine he'll be returning them to the store asap now that it's been confirmed that they're not festae. Too bad, I was hoping to get a female from him once he got a pair from the group.

That is a nice looking one though, if it helps. I would keep it if there was space.

I like mayans. My beat up one really colored up aftyer I slammed him with krill and Hikari Bio Gold. It only took a couple of months. This was before:

This is after.

Not mature female festae quality, but still quite nice, and I like these colors better than a male festae's colors.
