The nikon d50 is only $550 with lens. That's less than what most people here spend on fish.

the most i spent on a fish i still have is $4 for the oscar when it was 1.5" almost a year ago

my avatar pic was taken with a D50 i borrowed its a good camera but you do need to set up the tank and camera settings to get real good quality pics.
i recommend light light and even more light

Ewurm - go to your local camera shop, explain what you are doing to the guy there, and see if he can show you how to use your camera properly. In return for the info, buy an extra memory stick or something.

I use a 3.3 megapixel Olympus C-3000 zoom (and a 2.1 megapixel C-2020 before that), and get better pics than a lot of my friends with much more advanced and expensive camera equipment.

Email me if you want me to send you some of my better pics. I've also had some good shots posted for species ID on another well known cichlid site. It's usually less the camera and more the cameraman. Oh, and if you like my shots, you can usually pick up a used C-3000 for $150 or under on Ebay.

I tried using a 500 watt worklight, worked well with some tanks, not others. But no macro function means small fish pics suck like a pleco.
